Here is the info from John's email:

1. Main Sail Material: There has been a lot of conversation on the J30 Class Web Sites "Forum" remove the cloth restriction on main sails and allowing high tech mains. (Kevlar/Carbon). I have talked with a few different sail makers and will have quotes in the next few weeks. Z Sails (my sail maker) will quote a paneled carbon sail and North (Milford) will quote a 3DL and/or paneled main. I have been told that the high tech main will be about 50% more expensive the the current Dacron Mains, but the life should be 50% longer. 2. Rudder Additional Source: We recently approved IdaSailor as a rudder builder/supplier for the class spec rudders. The class has received a letter (I forwarded it to all governors today) from Competition Composites Inc, asking to be considered a a rudder supplier as well. I'll contact CCI for more info share it with the governors as soon as is available.

3. Alternate Backstay Materials: I have also been asked about allowing high tech back stay (Kevlar or spectra) and cascaded back stay adjusters.

I for one would like to see about removing the sliding chart table from above the ice chest. It is, in my humble opinion, the single worst design feature of the boat, and provides absolutely no tangible benefit.

The BOG meeting at the NA's on September 18 should be a discussion of the rule changes to be propopsed to the owners. Definative language will be developed and published for comment and a vote.

I got tired of crew, family and friends leaving the ring up, so I installed a small bit of spring at the ring hinge so it always drops down instead of staying up in the way of the table.

Easy fix on the ring. Orient it so the ring hinge faces aft and the sliding top will push it down instead of breaking it off. I put a label on the removable cover with an arrow - "This end forward".
