I added one in-line to the line that runs from the engine to the hotwater tank. This is not perfect but it gives me a good indication of what the water temp is.

I ordered a VDO Temp guage and sending unit from Torresen Marine http://www.torresen.com/ . Then I found a T fitting at home depot that I used to "tap" into the hotwater line.
