Ok now lets look at #526 cutouts. if that is 3/4 balsa core with two fiberglass skins ... those cut outs would be at least 1 inch deep. But they don't look like 1 in. deep to me.

#526 is pretty close to the end of the production of J30,s and they must have decided not to core that bulkhead. #448 has 3/4 inch balsa core in those bulkheads as I had to seal up some compass cut-outs that had exposed core when I bought the boat. (That is, the previous owner made larger cut-outs and slapped in the new compasses without sealing the newly exposed core.)
