One of my primaries is acting up - all of the winches are dry/slow.

My list of projects is exceeding my time available to finish them.

Anyone know of a place that might service these things? I'd like to just pop them all of - send them away - and install when they return inspected, cleaned, and greased.

I know this is typically a DIY project, but just too much to do!

Dan - my take that the time required to take them off, ship and reinstall them is close to the amount of time you'd take to service them in place. You have to pull the drums to get at the bolts that fasten them to the deck anyway. That's half the battle. Why not pay your local yard to service them in place? Probably just as cost effective.

Thats a better idea - although I was thinking of over-drilling/filling the mount holes (trying to do all deck through-holes this way) so I figured once they were off, I could just send them somewhere.

I suppose I could just as easily have a local yard take care of them - maybe give me a discount since they would have them on a work bench and not on a boat...

Wow - I wish I had access to your wallet; any chance you could adopt me? smile
Kidding aside, You are going to have to take the winches apart to get them off the boat as you will have to take the drums off to get at the deck bolts.
if you've got or will have the winches off, all you need is an oil drain pan or a bucket, some kerosene, an old paint bruch and a rag to clean the winches. Two palls, two pall spings, two bearings and depending on the size, a couple of gears to clean. Do one at a time so the parts don't get mixed up. Once clean, it's five minutes to grease them up and put the gears, palls and pall springs back on. You can watch a football game on tv and clean the winches during th commercials and be done by half time.
It's either that or end up having the marina give them to their least skilled yard hand that will put the palls in backwards etc.
PS. Stop at West Marine and buy a handful of pall springs before you start. In fact, if the winches are dry buy 12 and replace them all

You guys convinced me to do this myself, and I removed the primary and the cabin-top two-speed winches and brought them home this weekend.

I've not done this job before, but sounds like its just:

-soak then brush/scrub in kerosene to remove dirt and old grease
-replace springs and inspect for other bad parts
-lightly grease and reassemble (no grease on the palls)

Russ - do you have a West Marine part number on those springs?

Hopefully I won't find anything else that needs replacing - from reading other posts it sounds like the Australian supplier of parts is not something I'd want to deal with if I can avoid it.

Thanks - Dan

Good website here with links to various Barient winch exploded diagrams and parts lists.

Once the parts are identified, see if this West Marine Barient Winch Repair Kit parts match. You have to click each kit to look at the part numbers.

I bought the bag of Lewmar "Barient" springs referenced by Bill at WM... lifetime supply. a couple of years ago ...

Also have used the Aussie company for replacement parts on a Barient Self Tailer ... Didn't have a problem, but then it was just a couple of light weight plastic rings for the self t part. That company works email, and didn't seem to make much difference that they were that far away except it did take an extra week.

Good to know - just picked up all my cleaning supplies so I should have the damage list tonight.

Thanks again for all the info.
