So OK. first spin peel for the 12 and 13 year old foredeck crew on Vee Jay Xmas Break 2011 Training Camp. Yes, it is a bit "rough" in spots ... but I'm thinking they will have this pretty well down by next year. Of course Belle Faster's 11 year old helmer monitored by his 9 year old navigator sister is a huge step up from their abilities last winter. I'm thinking they will be serious contenders in the light winds of upper Narragansett Bay for the 2013 NA.

peel was from a 1.5 40 year old Xmas spin to a .5 North ... in typical dry season late afternoon wind drop conditions. While I gather that the OD'ers amongst us cringe at spin peels ... it is always good to put in your resume that you did your first spin peel on a J30 foredeck at 12 or 13 -- never mind driving boat at 11 while this was going on.

Crew from 537, 393 and 505.

Vic - great video! Who is TBA hull 393? Not in the class database.

Nevermind - I had a typo in the database. Found it.

So OK ... by now everyone should know that J30s do really fine spin peels if you run the second spinnaker halyard.
Today, was Vee Jay med staff day and our MD, physical therapist and pharmacist took over foredeck.

Our teen crew member taught them how to peel.
I know some of you guys think that spin and all that is not much fun ... but these guys were pretty happy.

I'm thinking that on 2/18/2012 Vee Jay was the only boat in the US doing spin peel practice with a gal foredeck crew who could handle any possible medical emergency. Wait ... that may be in the world.

once these guys started to jibe the spin ... they kept at it for 23 jibes before reaching the magic 8 second timing that Vee Jay likes to see ... then they broke for Dr. H's prescription of champagne and brownies.
