We're not expecting too much in RI from the wind issues, but the storm surge is another matter for some. Noon time here its raining fairly heavily with winds 30-40. This excerpt from the Newport YC at 0830 this morning forwarded to me by Vic.

We are presently at high tide. The water is just skimming the parking lot. Wind is from the East 15 to 18 mph gusting to 25. All vessels and facilities are secure. I am quite concerned about the storm surge especially tonight with the incoming moon tied. Captains on A and B dock should be especially vigilant (our pilings may not be high enough to compensate for the tide, a surge greater than 4', and possible wave action. If you have a mooring, you may want to consider using it while the wave action is down and manageable. If you stay at the dock, I will try to do my best by you within the parameters of maintaining and ensuring the physical safety of the staff.

Rhapsody is on the hard at the North end of Narragansett Bay on the eastern side at about 12 feet above mean high water. Winds will be from the East, so hopefully means there will not be a big storm surge up the bay... of course we have a full moon at the height of the storm.

Saturday I cut out the deck area under the port primary winch. Yesterday I recored and made sure there was a good skim coat of epoxy over the core to keep it dry in case the plastic sheet that was duct taped over it blew off. Hopefully when all this hurricane stuff is gone, I can finish the job.

this is truly a big storm ... on w coast Florida we've have 20 kts to 40 gusts on the Gulf since last thurs out of the NW ... gusts today droping into 30s. we are 1000 miles away now and it is not much different than it was when Sandy was 300 miles away.

Steady NW 30-40 knots in Annapolis, except briefly this morning it's been 20+ since midday Sunday. Expecting 4 feet above mean high tide this evening. Flooding due to rainfall may end up being more of a problem tomorrow especially if the wind shifts south as anticipated. Nice puff outside my office in Silver Spring a minute ago, kind of like a 747 on takeoff.

We're holding our breath here in NJ. Four J/30s at Raritan Yacht Club. All (I think) out of the water. The scary thing is the predicted surge tonight. If that is the predicted 6-9ft surge at high tide, we may be in trouble. It could happen, our bay faces east and if the wind blows from there for any length of time... Likely if we make it through high tide tonight, we'll be ok.

40+ since 1800 top gust of 58 in the last hour. Lights flicker but are still on and the two mighty oaks in my back yard are still standing. Can only imagine what it was or is like in Northern NJ or NYC.

Update from Narragansett Bay Tuesday morning. Confirmed that Rhapsody, Nemesis, Falcon and Wicked are all fine. The surge in the upper bay was not as bad as it could have been. When I went to Borden Light Marina in Fall River this morning, there was absolutely no sign of damage to anything floating or on land. Power is on there too.

Newport harbor seems to have weathered the storm well. The docks at Newport YC all stayed on the pilings so nothing broke free. At the Navy Marina in Newport, a friend down the dock from Rhapsody still had his boat in the water and weathered the storm just fine. The water level was 1 foot above the seawall at high tide last night. No problem as our pilings can take about a 12 foot surge.

I have been following the storm progress via your post. Thankfully it seems that you and other owners may have weathered the worst of Sandy. The Gulf Coast Fleet extends it's hopes that you and your families are not without power too long. We know what you are dealing with. God speed with your recovery. Jalapeno

Not confirmed yet, but pretty sure my baby Belle Faster very badly damaged, probably toast. The other 3 from Raritan YC were in a different marina and probably ok. Saw a picture of Blue Meanie and she's alive and well.
