Lost my ignition key to my 1979 J30. I can replace the ignition easily but I seem to recall the keys were all the same. If true does someone have the code of info I can give a locksmith.

I think you can buy one from a Yanmar supplier. I see them on ebay for $2.50. Just about anything will work.
Jon - what boat do you own? I need to add you to the class database.

I own a J30 called RollerCoaster, built in 79. Have owned it for about 12-14 years.

Thanks Jon - I just sent you the annual class email that has a link to your database record. If not in your inbox, check the spam filter.

You will find that there are 3 terminals on the back of the two position ignition switch. The red is fused battery+, which needs to be connected to the red/black wire that runs the instrument panel and allows the alternator to charge, and the white wire which supplies power to the starter push button. Some sources warn against starting the engine without the red/black powered as it could ruin the alternator diodes. You can get the wiring diagram here: http://j30.us/blog/?page_id=356 Good luck!

A screwdriver may actually work in the key slot. These ignition switches aren't real secure.
