Composting heads make a lot of sense in many ways and I think that the biggest obstacle in the conversion is the thought of dealing with the waste up close. From all I've read however, emptying the chamber is no worse than cleaning out a bucket of mulch. Regardless of the smells and reality of a holding tank inside the boat, out of sight out of mind seems to be the only pro of a conventional head.
I just rebuilt our head, so we'll use it for one more season and then upgrade nest year. We strictly cruise on the boat so far and are making changes with that in mind.

I am intrigued by this head. What is the power draw of that fan? Does it need to run all the time? Battery conservation is one of my focuses while cruising with no shore power.
Is there anything special to the toilet bowl liners? Or can you use any compostable paper.
I think the starboard tack issue might be limiting for racing. If I end up on a long startboard tack, I am not going to tack every time one of the lady crew needs to pee!

i installed a solar vent in addition to the 12v DC fan that comes with the head, the power draw from the DC fan is insignificant even with the fan running 24/7. It is the same type of fan used in a desktop PC. The solar vent alone will suffice resulting in a zero draw on the DC power system. The starboard tack factor is only really an issue on a long distance cruise but it would be foolish to deny a lady in need under any circumstances. Regular toitet toilet paper and coffee filters as a bowl liner are used. The easiest way to vent the composting head is to install a solar vent in place of the deck pumpout, no need for an additional hole in the deck. The composting head also allows you to cruise off season when most pump out stations are closed. Urine can be dumped overboard since it is 100% sterile with no impact on the environment.

I bury the bow a lot... how does the solar vent in the deck deal with that? Are they robust enough?

Scott - did you ever go ahead with a composting toilet? I have everything apart right now to do some bulkhead repair so it's a perfect opportunity to convert.
