Ok. I am wondering about how the J/30 will do with a different PHRF configuration.

First my boat has a Harken rollerfurler installed and the majority of my racing is just Wed night PHRF without spinnaker and occasional weekend stuff. I am OD now and plan on staying that way. Currently we sail with a #1 @ 163% for which we pay a 6 second penalty and we tack it to the deck not on the furler so I am not getting a credit for the furler.

What I was wondering if I changed to a <=135% and used the furler I would gain 12 seconds a mile (+6 for furler and +3 for <=135 and get back 3sec for the >160% penalty i currently have) so my rating would raise to 156.


Does that seem like enough to over come it's lack of power? Particularly in under 8kts of wind?

Aother benefit is more time on the water before the race rather than changing sails.

I guess you answered half of your question yourself .....
its gonna be a drag if under 6 or 7 knots, especially downwind, get ready for some interesting fights with MacGregor 26 s ( not the motorboat, the old ones with waterballast, which they conviently drop on a donwind course and raise their 6 foot !!! centerboard )

my roller furler Jib is a 155 and I wish I had more sail on the downwind in most regattas.... On the bigger events at our lake they dont give you credit for roller furlers .... I have no idea what they do in our club as there are some boats who really want a lot of different credits, in order to make them competiitve....( or at least they think )

On a different note. Our SPI is longer than J. I am not racing Spinnaker. Just a little weary that one of these days I get protested.... Which doesnt make any sense as most of the other boats have adjustable whisker poles which are WAY longer than J.
Any ideas how this is usually handled ?

Since when are there credits for roller furlers?

Depends on the regional PHRF standards. PHRF-NB grants +3 for roller furling

In PHRF-NE there is a recreational rating you can get if you have a roller furler. The other limitations for this is that you cannot have exotic material for the headsail such as kevlar etc. and that you can have only 3 sails Jib, Genoa and Spinnaker. For this you get 6sec a mile.

I just installed a roller furler and a #2 gennie. The headsail is dacron. Narragansett Bay PHRF changed my rating to 172. It blows pretty good up here so it will be interesting to see how this rating effects us. I want to do more cruising and double-handed racing so I am experimenting with this configuration. I'm saving my Tuff-Luff headstay setup for one-design racing, however.

Holy cow 172. I have to check out how they calculated that since I am sure PHRF-NE and PHRF-NB should be close. That would move me into D fleet which actually has better competition.
