Hey All,

Just picked up a nice ASYM for my J30 that I think flies better from the pole than from the deck. I tried flying from the pole over the weekend but the configuration was pretty jerry rigged and the forestay was picking up a lot more pressure than I would've liked.(see attached picture)

Does anyone have a suggestion for a race ready ASYM configuration that will allow me to essentially use the pole as an elevated bow sprit?

Use sheet on port side with padeye near shroud and twing on connected to the asym tack at the pole. You wont need the downhaul as it will pull down and away from the shroud. Also works well for symmetrical setup.

Thanks for your response! So with this configuration, a gybe would require rerigging the spinnaker, correct?

Yes for the asym unless you ran sheets and guys. That is the advantage of a sprit! Sym is just like a regular J/30 but no downhaul declutters the foredeck and makes gybes easier. No need to play with it when setting pole height.

ps - because the J/30 pole is oversized you need to disconnect it anyway to put on the other side of the headstay if doing an asym gybe.
