Hi Everyone, My wife and I bought J30 Hull #30 the first summer of the pandemic. We are now planning to move to Holland. I have a boat but no trailer or tow boat. Anyone willing to lend such things? I don't know how many J30 trailers are out there these days, but know some of you travel to regattas and not just by sail. Also, does anyone have recommendations for a good place to get a sand blast and bottom "redo" for fresh water in or around Holland? Expecting it makes sense to have this done there, but don't know the lay of the land (or inland sea). Thanks for any guidance, Bruce ericbrucenash@gmail.com

Welcome to Western Great Lakes! We sail our J30 out of Muskegon, about 30 min north (by car...) No recommendation for a trailer in the area, but I do recommend Torresen Marine for boat work, they are in Muskegon as well.

Hi Jeremy, Thanks for the recommendation. What is the status of the Lake Michigan fleet? One alternative to bringing a boat is selling and then rebuying a J30 or buying a more active one design boat. Trying to decide, as the logistics and cost of getting the boat there while also buying/selling homes, packing, getting new job... well, let's just say, there are other more pressing things. If buying a freshwater boat, know of any that are decent (they don't need to be great) and available? Cheers - hope to meet you soon. Bruce May the wind always be by your side and in the face of your competitors (except the boat I'm on....).

Bruce,
We have 2 J30s in Muskegon, I know of one maybe 2 in Grand Haven and I think at least one in Holland. I looked up Yacht Scoring for Holland this year and see a J29 there as well. As far as racing One Design for J30, there isn't much OD racing anymore. There are several still in Chicago, but most of us on the west side of Michigan don't go down for the Verve or NOOD regattas in Chicago anymore. We used to have our own start there, but numbers fell and we went to a PHRF division. That wasn't that much fun. There was a push for a J30/S2 9.1 level Lake Michigan fleet, but that fizzled as well. There are some good cross-lake races that many do, such as the Clipper Cup from Muskegon to Port Washington Wisconsin. The Tripp/Queens Cup to Milwaukee then to Muskegon (this year- it changes ports every year)
There is a J30 that is for sale in Holland, currently in Muskegon barn and the owner has seen this thread and I've texed him. I'll let him chime in about deatils.

Bruce,
There are two J30s in Grand Haven, Meistari Hull #454 and Frank Lloyd Starboard. We race PHRF Wednesday nights off the Grand Haven pier as part of the Grand River Sailing Club racing program in Grand Haven. Jeremy has described the situation very well, I would only add that the Anchorage Cup is the Saturday after Labor Day each year and runs from Grand Haven to Holland. The 2 J30s in Grand Haven typically do this race.
