I bought the telescopic one from West. It has 3 steps and folds up nicely on the transom... flat. The top "step" from the mount to the toerail is a bit of a stretch so I have a macramed rung there. For offset from the hull I use one of those flat boxlike fenders, which of course does not stay there unless deployed.

Do you have a picture showing the installation by chance? I cannot envision the "macrame rung"?
