J/30 Class Association Forums J/30 Forum The Boat, Sails and Equipment Table supports

I tried putting the table in my boat (hull 447) for the first time and it works fine folded. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be anything mounted to hold up the leaves when it is unfolded, just a piece of wood oriented fore/aft mounted on the underside of each leaf. Is there supposed to be a metal support like the small side tables? I think this is the first time the table has ever been in the boat since construction, so I wouldn't be surprised if a piece was missing or lost.

If I remember right (it has been a very long time), the leaves had something similar to the smaller tables at the end of the setees. A metal bar that folds up. The table is now living happily in St. Louis, so I can't check.

BTW, one word of warning. The vertical posts supporting the table seem to become stuck, most especially in salt water. Both of the boats on the east coast that I borrowed for regattas had them essentially welded in place. I guess i would remove the table when not in use.

I have the table supports at home. We just re-discovered them after several years. ;-) As you imagined, they are wire rods (about 1/4" in diameter) bent into a "U" shape. The top of the "U" has a short section that is bent outward at 90 degrees to allow it to hang from holes drilled in the aluminum table support tubes. If you want to make up a set, I can measure mine to give you the dimensions. To be certain that they will actually fit the dimensions of your table and support tubes, I'd recommend making a mockup using light-weight coat-hanger wire or something similar before commiting to have them made up in stainless steel

Having recently installed Dennis' table in St. louis, I just want to add that the wire pieces seem to be somewhat precisely formed. I recall that there was no obvious side or end for the wires, and, while close to symetric, when put in wrong -- they were wrong. I wonder if there is a less touchy way to solve the problem then recreating the wires?

We are in the process of removing the table and support posts from Quicksilver. I suspect they have never been removed before and as mentioned above seem to be welded in place. Does anyone have a good plan for removing them short of cutting them off? I am a person that hates to do something irreversable. Yes, the leaves on the table are supported with two metal u shaped rods. I will soon have them and a table for someone wanting them. Quicksilver Hull #344

I have a table that was missing the support brackets when I got the boat. I had a yard fabricate 4 plywood supports that are hinged from the center wood box of the table. Not hard to home make with a jigsaw and some sandpaper. I would not recommend that anyone discard the table. On resale, anyone wishing to cruise the boat would view that as a must have item.
