I am trying to replace my old backstay set-up with a lighter one and leading the lines into the cockpit.
Since I saw those beautiful pictures of the mainsheet set-up (thanks for that)
my guess was that David also must have a nice and detailed picture(s) of the backstay.: )
I would like to know what blocks people are using and also what kind off line is recommended.

Bumping Stefan's old thread because I'm looking to do the same on Rhapsody. I'll post the picture below that David Bows referred to on the main sheet thread. You can see the from this picture the back stay adjustment running forward in the cockpit. Anyone have pictures of this entire back stay setup?

If it helps, these photos of an old boat called Zephyr designed by Scott Tonguis may be a good solution.

Thanks David. Since my traveler cleats are located in the same position your back stay cleats are, I'll need to modify this slightly, but I can make it work. Are you setting up Rampage the same way as Zephyr for all the running rigging?

Yes, she will be set up exactly like Zephyr, but with newer technology. We're going with a new Harken windward sheeting car and deck organizers. The track is no longer reccessed as this catches moisture, leaves, etc... We are also looking at the new spinnaker blocks which are sensative to pressure, so we don't have to turn on/off the click. Anyone used these? If so, do you like them?

My backstay arrangement is rather similar to Dave's. I'll get a pic when the boat is in the water later this month.

A couple of differences:

- We have twice the purchase... methinks the boys in Nola are a bit bigger than I when the wind is up in the 20+ range.

- We run the line down to the bottom of the cockpit, then forward, rather than along the coaming.

Works pretty well for us.

Dennis - your setup sounds more like what David Bows has shown in the top picture. That was the setup I'm trying to reproduce, because my traveler cleats are in the same spot he has them shown. I think it would be more comfortable on the butt cruising with the lines run in the bottom of the cockpit also.

Unfortunatly Malloca is not rigged and in the water but I can still take some photos of the backstay setup. It works well - I would like to add some purchase. For now I just grab the line and stand up and pull at the same time and this is usually enough to get the triangle down to the about the pulpit - which is what we shoot for, for max. We adjust the length of the backstays depending on the breeze so that the pulpit is max on.

With enough weight on the rail, we seldom use the backstay.

I've drawn a little diagram and a table with some proposed options with different mechanical advantages. There is nothing exotic, and until I can take some measurements on the boat, I'm not sure if the concept will work. I've already got a padeye where the existing 8:1 single ended adjuster is connected on the stbd side just outboard of the engine vents. I would just add another padeye to the port side. Check out the drawing below and the table and see if anyone has a setup like this that works. I'm interested on how the transition is made from the bail to the line running on the bottom of the cockpit.
