I plan to purchase a j30 next year. We live in a gated community and are having our dock built. My plan is to keep the boat on a lift. For ARB purposes I need to know what the distance is from the waterline to the top of the cabin(exterior). Thanks for the help. Ralph Howey, Beaufort, SC

A bit klugy - but you could get close by scaling it off the profile picture of the J30 on the jboat site. Print it, blow it up, use dividers....

I believe it's 10' 4".

Sorry. That's 10' 4" from bottom of keel to cabin top. 5' 1" WL to cabin top or therabouts.

Thanks for all the replys. I thought about trying to scale it from a photo and may give it a try. I have decided to just go the old :"it's better to beg forgiveness than to ask permission" ARB's can be a pain...
Any thoughts on purchasing a j30 as a day sailer and occasional overnighter will be appriciated. My wife and I lived aboard our boat for about 8 years, have been boatless for several years and miss sailing.

I measured mine in the water this morning and got between 5'0" and 5'1" for waterline to cabin top (top of molding on edge of sliding companionway hatch).

Thanks a lot. That means that I can put the boat on a lift and keep the cabin top at the level of the dock hand rails.

ok you asked if a j 30 is the right boat for you ...
I bought mine beginning of the year and I love her.... We stay every weekend friday til Sunday on the boat. She is great for extended daysailing and I would go as far as to say short cruising. A little too small for full time cruising for my taste. but I wouldnt mind spending more time as I do right now.

In the meantime we smoked the competition in our Club Beercan Regatta Championship with 4 bullets 3 seconds ... lol

We sail and race the boat as a couple, when the wind pipes up we occasional have a 3rd person on board ( we race non spinaker class) You can call that undersized crew for sure.... Put a roller furler and self tailers on it and she can be sailed singlehanded pretty easy

Thanks for the info on weekending on your 30. My wife and I lived aboard a 42 footer for 8 years. before that we had a pearson 30. I have raced phrf and one desgin on j 24s and j 29s. It seems the j 30 is the perfect boat for us now. There does not seem to be any similiar boats out there. I wonder why?
