Is it possible to install a power generator and A/C unit in a J-30? I have looked for unsused storage but cant seem to find it. Any suggestions?

put a generator in the anchor locker
hang the anchor from the pulpit and make a small anchor locker in the forward triangle to handle the rope...

but why do you want to do this ?

Get a portable AC from Walmart ( 120 dlr) and set it into the companionway.... and if you dont have juice, get a portable generator from Honda or Yamaha ( 1000 dlr ???) and have that one sit in the back cockpit as long as its running ....

1.Its much cheaper than your plan
2. you dont cut off the boat ( which will retain the value )
3. its done with one trip to town
4. you can remove when you dont need it
5.you still have a chance racing the boat as it was intendet to do

I just saved you at least 5000 bucks ...

I live in Puerto Rico and just got married to a Virginnian. There are no cool nights down here. For that reason she does not enjoy spending the nights out in the islands nearby (USVI, BVI, etc.). On the other hand finding a crew to race it has been somewhat impossible. Which leaves me with a boat I love, hull #091, tied to a marina without being able to sail it as frequent as I would like. I thought doing all these things would make the boat more attractive to her.

Otherwise, I'll be forced to sell it because I'm not using it as the boat requires.

i will be down there in July banging aroud de ilons ( bvi) ......

never had air on the floating winnebagos i rent down there ... but I can see your point of needing max comfort ... with a lot of work you should be able to work that stuff into the boat without cutting too much stuff up...

I would raise the outmost rear pertion of the cockpit and put the stuff down there. put a lid on top so you can get to it... might even be able to snug a generator a little more forward over the prop ...

or as I said, use the anchor locker and hang the anchor up front, with a hinged door from above ... there is astoundingly much room in the forward cabin ...

Carlos - The Redhead owns J/30 J. Doe in the BVI. She's been know to travel around the country to sail on a J/30 and was up in New England this summer doing just that. Perhaps she'll see this and offer to bring some additional crew with her to PR. Where is the boat located in PR?

Hey Bill, Carlos... amazing as it seems there is some drama to getting 8 people to share a Caribbean vacation racing a J30. But yeah he should race it... haven't seen the boat, unless its the blue one, or what used to be SweetCorn (black) from Tortola. It would be nice to see more J30s together in the Carib...we had our "own" class at rolex in 98...of course they then thru in a Pearson ... but it was good. Bill...you coming down to Cowpet? We are on island from the 28th December... just a hop back to do Key West...

Merry Christmas! We're doing Christmas in New England this year. I spoke to my brother and he's rented his condo out this year for Xmas & New Years. We're defintely spending Christmas 2007 there though! I may try and convince my wife that she needs to go to Cowpet for her February school vacation.

On the anchor size - if you can wait until next week, I'll make a run to Rhapsody and measure the anchor locker dimensions for you.

For the people around you in the anchorage do *not* get a portable generator and put it on the back of the boat. The other boats want to enjoy the peace and tranquility but will instead be cussing you as you are down below nice and cool and cannot hear the loud motor echoing throughout the harbor. Can you tell this is a pet peev of mine (-:

thor, thanks again. the first owner of hull 91 told me he had an A/C unit installed in the v-berth's closet. the thru holes are still there so i'll study the possibility of installing it there. i also noticed that the area on top the prop seems big enough to hold a small generator. i'll keep you posted. thanks for your feedback. also, let's try to make the arrangements to meet at tortola. it'll be nice to show my wife that there are lots of better beaches in the USVI and BVI. willy t it is!!! my e-mail is coloncon@aol.com. use it whenever you need anything from PR.

redhead, hull 91 was once called "locura" and it was navy blue. when i bought it i painted it white and called it "sultan". if you raced the heineken culebra international, you must have seen it. we won the jib and main class. the boat is in fajardo (Sea Lovers Marina). if my plans don't work, i'll sell it. but, if i still own it for the rolex in st. thomas, i'll call you. thanks!

david, lol! the portable generator also means a $10,000.00 fine from our friends on the big white and red boat, the USCG.
