I am painting the hull and rudder on Rauzer II hull #448 and would like to know the best procedure and material to use to bed the rudder pintle straps. It did not appear as though there was any bedding compound on the old bolts or around the mounting holes when I took it apart. Anyone have any experience or references on this?

A few years back I dried and repaired the rudder on Quicksilver. When reinstalling the pintle straps the fisrt thing done was to remove about 1/2 inch of the balsa around each mounting hole and fill with thickened West epoxy. When redrilling the holes use a 1" diameter piece of tubing to make sure the pintles are aligned and the pins will go back home. The method used to drill the holes is to drill half way from each side with a 1/8' pilot drill. This helps to get a straight hole that lines up with both sides of the strap. Take it slow and drill carefully as it is easy to get misaligned holes drilling through the thick rudder. 3M 5200 sealant was used to assemble faying surfaces of the straps and a fillet of the 5200 was also put around them afterwards. Be sure to mask the area off well because the 5200 will get everywhere. Good luck!

While you were repairing your rudder did you find (or even look?) for a source for the metal bits. The brackets on the transom shattered when the boatyard hit it with a trailer... seemd like I should replace all the metal if thats what it looks like inside. If there is any body who has replaced it all...does it come premade, off the shelf like a J24 or is this custom metalworking. J/Boats sent me to Scheafer... but its not on their website...

So, never got a reply from anyone...although with further input I find that rigrite makes the parts...but, of course they are not readily available...but for a few thousnad they will be... Does anyone out ther have "specs" Drawings, details of any parts they have remade? It looks as though the boatyard metal makers are going to have to do the job....

Acting on the discovery of crevace corrosion, I replaced my lower rudder fitting in DEC '03 and I seem to recall that in the research portion of the process I spoke to some persons at TPI [at (401) 247-1050] who advised that while the part was no longer available they could send me copies of drawings for it. I found it easier to bring the old part to the fabricator

check this forum for the J/30 sailor who was parting his boat out after a huricane. he may have a part. Failing a salvage part, find www.philsfoils.com he features all kinds of reasonably priced rudder gudgeons & pintles. He's gotta have something that'll work.
