Bill,
My wet, original rudder weighed in at 77 lbs. The replacement rudder from Tillotson Pearson in '99 weighed 71 lbs.

I don't recall if the hardware was on or off (11 years of brain fade)

When I pulled the rudder off Rauzer II it weighed in at 69-70 pounds. The bathroom scale I used was pretty flakey, so an accurate measurement was not to be.

After drilling about 150 holes from the water line down, peeling, drying for almost 3 months, grinding, sanding, filling the holes, over-drilling and epoxy the mounting holes, fairing, applying a layer of cloth, 7 coats of epoxy and 3 coats of VC Offshore, the rudder then weighed 64 pounds.

The rudder was built fat as has been mentioned by others on this site and to bring it down to template specs would have required a lot more work than I was willing to do. I did grind down the port side a little more than the starboard, as it was the fattest side and had the most osmosis damaged glass. Once the surface was ground down to solid glass, I could see the core blocks through the 1/4 inch +/- of glass and was happy to not see evidence of rot. The core that was extracted from all of the drilled holes appeared to be good, white balsa, albeit varying degrees of wet.

I am pretty happy with the way it turned out even if it is not as thin and trim as it might be if it were templated.

I was pleasantly surprised when I pulled the rudder to redo this winter. It weighted in 68lbs.with the brackets, that was and easy one to remove from the project list

79lb without the brackets -ugh. But it is spot on the foil specs. If the foil is correct should I really be concerned with 10lbs.? I am going to check it with a moisture meter but it seems to be in pristine condition. All holes are sealed etc.

ZV2 rudder weighs 78 pounds with mounting hardware. We oversized drilled and filled with expoxy which added a little weight.

526 ... drilled and repaired with penetrating epoxy at bottom and at worn tiller pivot hole ... after 8 months dry out in dehumidified basement. 75 lbs. with mounting hardware.

Bill ... I just noticed your original weights are without hardware. Any hint of what that stuff weighs?
