Has anyone installed one of the new Harken Carbon fiber head foils on thier J. I'm not sure they are class legal but I race PHRF and I don't think it matters. need to replace my headfoil pretty soon and was thinking about installing one of them.

Any particular reason they shouldn't be legal?

I don't know if they're significantly more expensive than headfoil/tuff luff. Don't know how much the weight difference is. I certainly wouldn't rush out to buy one until my headfoil needs to be replaced (which happens all too often unfortunately).

Maybe this belongs in the folder on rules, but: 5.8.1.2 Standing Rigging/Permitted Alternatives/Jib luff groove systems other than that which is provided standard shall not have a fore-and-aft dimension exceeding 31 mm.

That would indicate limitation is size, which I cannot determine from any of the web info. Measure then check with class measurer before buying.

Harken Carbo H700112 $552
Tuff Luff SC170636EXT $339.20

Looking at their respective web sites Harken is .147 lbs/ft Tuff Luff .17 lbs/ft about 3/4 lb over approx 32'. BTW love that word on the Harken page--'lubricious'!

I am curious about the official ruling here. Larry, are carbon headfoils approved by the class?

According to Harken thier carbon fiber foil is much more durable that the plastic foils - might be worth the price diference. I have to lower my mast every winter and in the process myfoil has had a couple of chunks taked out of it. The main reason I'd buy one is because they are suposed to be more durable.

I installed the Harken foil on my 30 this year and it works as well as the Tuff Luff. It isn't really carbon, but Harken has made it black and called it "Carbo". It doesn't appear to be that different than the Tuff Luff. The sail does slide nicely during the hoist.

I can't imagine real carbon fiber holding up well for that application
