Yipes, the rudder price has gone up.

What about class rule 5.1- Where it suggests the rudder must be made from molds made from a TPI master plug.

Has a ruling ever been made for other builders of rudders? I'd make my own if that were the case.

It may be time to discuss some other replacement pieces also. With the state of Rig-Rite, spars and booms are going the way of the rudder.

I am going to be looking at a new boom in the near future and I would like to not have to deal with Rig-Rite. Could we get Hall or someone to propose some options and just consider it?

We are seeing a negative side of an older class - getting reliable parts at a fair price. If these parts are to hard/expensive/impossible to get it will not be good for the class, re-sale value will drop as well as there will be boats sailing with equipment that should be replaced, which could be dangerous.

Please do not take this as soapboxing just rational thinking for the good of a great boat and great class.

I think that this is a very reasonable point. We need to be sure that we can support owners who want to keep the boat in one design trim, that's vital to keeping the fleets healthy.

On the rudder front, one also wonders if there aren't a few ratteling around from boats which were writeoffs in Katrina. Some of those will probably get re-built, but several looked to be total losses. Ditto other major bits.

I agree with the comments expressed about alternate sources of supply at reasonable prices. I'll contact Corey Butlin at Hall Spars and ask him to read this posting and see what he can suggest Corey owns J/30 Blitz #357.

I believe that this will require a change to the class rules and suggest that the J/30 Class executive board initiate a dialog and put out some potential feelers for alternate sources and draft rules changes so that the class can review and comment. How do we "officially" get this started?

This is really a question for the class measurer, but Hall Spars is already approved as a mast builder. It would be reasonable for the Gov Board to approve them for the boom as well.

One of my rowing buddies is Eric Goetz who own Goetz Boats. He builds world-class yachts and is as honest as the day is long. Perhaps someone on the Governing Board could contact him about replacement rudders. I mentioned it to him and he said he would be willing to discuss this issue with someone. Here's his contact info:
