I'm looking to buy a J/30, somewhere along the Gulf Coast of FL.
And, what is the preferred marina or mooring for same in the St. Pete / Tampa area?

Good luck. I have been looking for over a year now. I have walked away from 3 deals. The bottoms on all of the boats were severely blister. All of the boats needed expense peel jobs ($6000-$8000 depending on the drying time). You also want to pay close attention to engines. Some of the boats I looked at had weak engines. Keep all of these things in mind when negotiating your price.

Were those 3 boats, blistered beyond repair?

If I was purchasing a J/30, I would look for a J/30 in good rig and engine. The bottom is something you redo every 6 years. Take a look at Blitz. This information is available on page http://www.j30.org/html/market/boats.html

Blitz recently won the 2003 North American Championship in Annapolis with a bunch of wankers on board. The boat needs a new bottom, but otherwise in good shape.

If you live on the coast and need a new bottom, I recommend taking the J/30 to Diversified Marine (aka Donnie "MojoMan" Brennan).
