Class rules say the mast step may be no closer than 1" from the molded step in front of it... so if you're racing in J/30 Class, that may be a small issue.

With only 3 people to hold the boat down, you'd probably heel too much. You might use smaller sails (a #2 instead of a 1), or flatten the main (backstay & outhaul), or lower the traveler. On a reach in a decent breeze, I haven't found anything that works.

One way to balance the boat nicely and reduce weather helm when shorthanded is to use a #2 and a single reef in the main. I've found that the boat then balances really nicely and its more comfortable to sail period. Obviously not so good for racing perhaps but great for daysailing and cruising.
