I had no problems with the gel coat. It was amazing, the boat was perfect, absolute mirror finish gelcoat - just like it came out of the factory.

There is one that will not take off the barrier coat. I will get the numbers for you.

Based on info that David Bows and a friend of his provided, Peel Away 7 is roughly equivalent to the Peel Away Marine Safety Strip (compare the Material Safety Data Sheets). I tried dealing with the local Home Depot and they did not have the 5 gallon buckets, only 1 gallon @ $63.97/gal. They offered to discount it by 10%. I looked on the web and located:

They sell it at $44.86/gal plus shipping. 6 gallons shipped from them was $60 less expensive than Home Depot when tax was added. So I'm looking out the window at the sleet coming down and have ordered 6 gallons on line. Hopefully when this arrives, the weather will cooperate and allow me to strip the bottom!

None of this was available when I stripped J.Doe...I used a case of easyoff oven cleaner... worked great. And I used a red varnish nap roller for the epoxy coatings... These unscientific processes are necessary when working in the third world, fourth dimension...

wondering what kind of spraygun you are using.
I always rolled the baltoplate, but it takes so much time to get it smooth.
Hopefully spraying will save me some time when sanding.
btw. I don't have a aircompressor...

I have used an airless spray gun to spray VC Offshore. Its supposed to be pretty similar to Baltoplate. Just needed to thin it out some, then wetsand with 200-600 grit.

I am looking at the Wagner for $80 but the review I read wan't that good....

I used a Wagner airless sprayer. It ran about $350. This differs from the cheap models in that it has a separate pump and spray gun with about 30' of hose between. It works well with properly thinned VC.

Steve, there will be another 'Chinook' one day, but not in the immediate future. For now I will continue to frostbite my JY-15 and race on other people's boats.

My yard recommended using the West System yellow foam rollers normally used for epoxy. I've had nothing but good luck with them.

Is it necessary to sand/rough up the finish between first and second coats of VC Offshore or Baltoplate?
