I am working on John's new boat ( my old one :-) and I am trying to get the martec off, so he can send it in and get a new pin installed over the winter...

BUT I already cant get the conical nut off which sits inside. I got me a 3/8 square piece of stock and have a ratchet with a long extension attached. The square is basically only as long as I need it to clear the two " wings " where the propeller blades are resting against if they would be intslled ...

Now I have used liberal amounts of creaping oil to lube it up. Than I have even heated the big blob from the outside with a torch ... than while one person holding down the blob i turned the sqare...

The nut didnt budge at all, the square stock is now twisted nicely ...
what can I do to get that nut off ?
Any ideas ?

Look inside the square hole. You should see the end of two cotter pins coming in from opposing directions. Straighten the legs and pull the pins out from the outside. The force you previously applied may have deformed the cotters. If you can't pull the pins out readily, try tightening the nut and then pull out the pins. A 3/8" socket extension should fit the nut.

As I recall, the prodcedure is spelled out on the Martec website.

I pulled my engine this fall for rebuilding and also pulled the shaft. Since I was replacing the shaft seal too, this was a no brainer to remove the coupling and shaft seal collar. I rebuilt the Martec prop by getting a new pivot pin and cotter pins from Martec. This was done without removing the prop from the shaft.

did you rebuild the prop yourself ? In other words drilled a bigger hole into the " wings" and the blades and than inserted the new oversized pin ?

This might be possible leaving the nut and the " body " on the shaft ?????

If I follow the removal instructions to the point I still dont get the nut out ... Doing it on the boat would probably do the trick

I didn't have slop in the clearance holes for the pin so did not need to redrill for an oversized pin. If you do need an oversized monel pin, Martec sells them in 2 diameters larger so you can do that twice before needing a new prop. No reason why if you had access to a drill press you couldn't drill a true hole yourself. I imagine a savvy bike shop owner might have access to those resources :-)

I had to replace the pin because it was bent. A hammer and punch did the removal trick. If I hadn't already pulled the shaft for other reasons, this could have been done on the boat. I must say it looks really nice now since I could easily use a buffing wheel with the parts disassembled.

I was not able to get my prop off the shaft. I had to take the whole shaft out and took the shaft with the prop to the place where I had the prop re-built.

I was able to get the conical nut off but the prop was seized to the shaft.

Call H&H props in Salem Mass and see if they can give you a clue how they get the props off.

Had the same problem last year. You need to apply some heat to the main body and use a pneumatic or electric impact wrench. Have a helper hold the body steady with a large pipe wrench with cloth padding to keep from damaging the surface. Martec does a nice job of refurbishing.
