I notice everyone has thier hull numbers posted in thier signatures. Un-related, I can't find any way to determine my hull number. Is it stamped on the boat? Is it hidden in the vessel number? Included in the paperwork? My vessel number is six digits.

The hull # on your boat should be stamped on the back of your boat on the starboard side about two inches below the gunwale on the transom. Your hull number should be three digits towards the end. On my boat the last two digits are the month it was built and the three numbers before that is the hull number. It might also be on your sails.

The hull number is actually the set of numbers in the middle of the "HIN" or Hull Idnetification Number. If I recall correctly, for a J/30 it begins TPY030 to denote Tillotson Pearson Yachts and a J/30. Then the next set of numbers is the hull number, then finally it's the month and year of construction. In the beginning of the run the month and year were done in numbers, like "0980", then later they changed to a letter code for the month. That all adds to up a HIN for Mondial which is TPY0302150980.

Early boats are TSPXXSSSMMYY, with XX=30, SSS the hull serial number and MMYY the build date. So #259 is TSP302591080 built Oct 1980.

On or before January 1981 the format switched to TSPXSSSSMYYA with X=0 and a four digit serial number. M is for model year format with YY the year and a letter month where A=Aug, B=Sept, C=Oct_L=Jul; those built from August to December, like automobiles, are actually from the previous year. The first of that style I've seen is #270 is TSP00270M81F built January 1981, although there is at least one hull number higher than that #284 of the old format (TSP302841180). The last complete hull ID I have seen with my own eyes is #545 Bear Away TSP00545E687 built Dec 1986. I spoke to the original owner of #547 a few years back who convinced me it was the last of the breed. I've seen some higher numbers, but I'm fairly certain they were mistakes.
