Several J/30s I've been on have made a creaking or popping sound when I walk around on the side decks. Is this normal? What causes it? Thanks,

Dan

That's why he got rid of it - no personality. (-:

Thor - why did you get rid of her?

kinda long story ....
let me first say this ... I will miss all the good help and cameradery from the fellow J 30 owners and this board in particular.

I am on a lake which is super shallow ( Lake Carlyle Illinois ) and I am on the northern part of it which is not as deep as the southern part ( Marina costs down there just went to 8 dlr per foot for 12 months )Ours is cheaper but 6.25 is not really cheap for that mudhole either.

Anyhow I havent bumped once last year, but it gets on your nerves sailing with 1 foot clearance under your keel, or be stuck in the marina when the corpse ( of engineers) lets out to much water.
Than I had to pay 200 bucks in the spring and 200 bucks in fall for the incompetent Marina folks to haul the boat out ( you better have 5 people help with the mast anyhow...)
Although I had a very nice trailer all that commotion didnt allow it in my time table to make a visit to other lakes ....

We really liked the J .... won the club championship again this year and had some super sweet sails during the year.
We sail mostly doublehanded and the Spinnaker was a little too cumbersom for the two of us , so we only hoisted it a couple of times....

Now, we have bought a Corsair 28 R ( folding Tri) which has about half the space inside...lol But it folds up easy so I can use any kind of slip, even the shallow ones with 1 foot of draft. I can go anywhere on the lake I please ... I can pull it behind my car with ease, I can put the mast up and down by myself. Its fast ... really scary fast ...lol

Marina offers a Trailer sailor program and I will keep the Corsair on the trailer during the week. ( and find an empty slot during the weekend ) I save almost 2000 grand that way alone.

If you add the savings it doesnt make up for the exorbitant price you have to pay for a Corsair of course.. but did I say its fast ...

My old boat is one of the nicest J 30 I have seen and I will miss her a lot... but the Corsair offers me easy access to other lakes ( Kentucky Lake ,,, maybe a week in Wisconsin at Door COunty, FLorida is not out of the question either ) The Screacher is easy to sail double handed and the assy Spi is also much easier to handle.

I went from a boat with PHRF of 300 to the J now I have a boat with a 40 or so Phrf ...
gonna be interesting ...

Thanks Thor
