I am enclosing a photo taken from Rampage recently. The exhaust cracked in the past and allowed water to penetrate into the back starboard side of the transom.



Oddly enough, there is no barrier at the bottom of the hull, so water was allowed to leak into the core. Note: the failed balsa at the point of the exhaust.

It is recommended to address this issue if you notice blisters on the backside of the hull or a noticed crack around the exhaust.

I have replaced the compromised balsa, vacuumed bagged the hull and allowed to dry. These repairs effectively saved the J/30. The hull is now dry and all points of water penetration have been sealed. I recommend resealing the through hulls and chain plates semi-annually.

I'll provide a photo soon, she looks like new now.

I've got to do some recoring in several places on my boat. I'm going to wait until it cools off a bit, though. It's way too hot right now for that sort of a project. I will also be isolating the exhaust port with thickened epoxy. The way it's currently configured is horribly engineered.

I will also be rebedding all of the deck hardware in order to isolate the fastener holes from the core. From the minor hardware replacement I've done so far, it looks like J/Boats did a poor job of this.

One of the criteria I had when looking for a new boat was no recore work needed. So much for that idea. Not that I have any regrets at all. This will be a very nice boat when I get done with everything.

It looks like Rampage (are you keeping that name?) is coming along nicely. I drove by last week when they were fitting the new core.

Did you do the dissection yourself or get it done professionally. I'm interested in having some work done on Rhapsody this coming winter. I've got blisters above the waterline on the stbd side of the transom. This is counter-intuitive because I would have thought they would have been below the waterline.

We hired a local boat builder to do this. They did a really good job.

Keeping Rampage for now. Isn't it bad luck to change the name of a boat?

Jason, go look at her now and let me know what you think. She looks brand new. After painting the hull and obtaining a new set of Benz Faget North Sails, I'll be completely happy with the 1979 model J/30.

Of course, she has the original sheet stoppers and not rigged for cross sheeting. So some dedicated hours in the slip is upon us.

Cross-sheeting; I've seen it on other boats. How is this set up on a J/30?

I drove by Rampage on the way home yesterday. It's really looking good. The transom looks like a brand new boat. They really did an impressive job.

Bill: I had Horatio at Pirate Cove do a 3x4 ft. section of starboard hull. He worked on the boat in 85 at TP. Problem is that he is part time so it would have to be inside during the winter. Only hint of a problem was a 3 in. "stress" crack. This is probably from 23 years of Newport launch drivers hotrodding into the side of the boat. When you think about it that hull is like an egg shell. second repair I have had to do because of launch drivers ... You don't see the damage when it is done ... but years later that hull sucks in water drop at a time.
