damm I got blasted on the downwind legs from some pesky ranger 26's ( phrf 198 !!) last weekend.. of course I was using my spi boom and couldnt get the jib to fly ....

what size whisker poles you guys are using ? anybody has an extra one for cheap

p.s. got them good on anything upwind but with that phrf difference the rolled over me at the end ...

I use a whisker pole but the max length you can use it is the same length as the spinnaker pole. I use it because it is a bit quicker to move around the foredeck and if we go with a smaller jib we can adjust the length.

I find it very hard to fly the class 163% wing on wing unless there is +10kt, the leech just flops over especially if there is any kind of chop.

This is where I think for PHRF a 150% would be an improvement. Keep the power for the upwind but lose the floppy part downwind.

Of course our strategy for taking care of a faster PHRF boats is to hang with them upwind, camp on their ass going down wind and reel them in and then roll em at the finish. Drives them crazy. Maybe your Rangers have the same strategy (-:

I run a recut 155 on a harken furler, havent really measured it, but should be a little smaller like a 150 isch now....

I dont do OD ( only foghorn is on the lake and he doesnt come out very often ) and in phrf I dont have to follow the max pole length...
I think the common idea is to have the whisker pole at least as long as the leach of the sail. I just want to make sure that I get the correct length and size ....

p.s. yup the "slow" boats trying to mess with you at the start and every possibility they have .... than they just follow you and they have it made ... phrfing over you with a couple of seconds... lol

I just sail PHRF also but I thought there was a pole length limit. I have been told this but I have not actually checked, I just assumed it was true, would be great if it is not true.

Heh. In my fleet (JPYC beer can races) it seems I owe everyone else time in their jib & main section. It's Really Annoying.

I know, I know, people have been telling me for years I need to race MORF. There's the crew (or lack thereof) issue, and I just haven't ever been able to convince myself that I'm ready for more serious competition.

On Long Island Sound, your pole for non-spin racing can be as long as the LP of your largest genoa. This is pretty darn long. Somewhere around 18' if I recall correctly.
I have a pole that I would like to sell. You would need to come and pick it up. I don't think that UPS will take it.

Without kidding I need one which the wife can handle i.e. Line extendeable ...
She clips the fat part onto the mast, clicks in the line fo the sail and than pull it out ...... gibyng she pulls it in and pulls the sail and pole all connected to the other side and than extends the pole again ....

thats the idea anyhow
