The boomkicker is some of the best money I ever spent on the boat. Vic is right in that it still helps to use the main halyard at the boom end, but the main sheet can also be used to balance against the boom kicker when needed. Also boomkicker now has an optional stopper to prevent detachment. Works great.

Question; for racing, does the boom kicker improve performance? If so, could you elaborate on its performance benifits.

Boom kicker or any solid vang is a convenience/safety item, allowing you to eliminate the boom topping lift, while still preventing the boom from crashing to the deck upon releasing the main halyard. Some claim benefit in light air by supporting the boom, but I've never seen much evidence of this.
