I received quotes from the two class approved sources for a new rudder. They offer options that include the following: - Lay-up in epoxy resin: (Standard is Vinyl ester resin)
- High density foam core: (solid core of alternating grain Mahogany)
- Exterior Carbon fiber skin
Any reason why I would want these options? I know the core will be isolated from the start, so should not have water infiltration issues. I'll end up patching the existing water-logged, core soaked, broken rudder to hold me until the new rudder arrives.

I would put $$$ elsewhere ... perhaps a light #1 for Marblehead 2010.

How does a replacement rudder with a substantially lighter core material or one with carbon fiber meet class requirements?
Other than weight savings, I can't think of a good reason to go with those options if it involves a higher cost. The only other avenue for improvement is durability and quality contruction should negate that. Foam core is more expensive - and is certainly more workable for those doing the construction - than balsa; yet balsa is great for core so long as it's kept dry.

ok - that was pretty much along my thoughts, but I wanted to confirm it. I told them I want it class legal per specs for weight and dimensions. I did confirm they will epoxy isolate all holes which is the key to long life.

I didn't consider any exotic material changes on my new rudder for the reasons above.

$1982 shipped to me, including isolating all holes and inserting stainless steel sleeves for all bolt holes. It's the basic mahogany core, vinyl ester one design construction. I'll need to do the blue gelcoat stripes, barrier coat, bottom paint, sand & burnish. I'm reusing the mounting hardware from the old rudder.
