What part number and where have we been getting the replacement sheaves when replacing the wire halyards with rope?

dito for jib sheaves

and what is the main halyard du Jour to replace the wire.

After 25 years Vee Jay's making a move.

I ordered the sheave and halyards through Layline (there may some issues contacting them right now). I went with Admiral Dyneema for the halyards.

I believe they went through RigRite for the sheaves.

Vic - ditto what Jason said. You saw the main halyard on Rhapsody that I got from Layline. Stripped back for the stuff up the mast, with the cover for the clutches and winch. You can also use NE Ropes Sta set-X which has a parallel core center for low stretch. A little cheaper, just a little more weight, but very durable and low stretch.

Use the market tab on J30.org and select equipment suppliers. Locate the link for Kenyon/RigRite. I ordered the new style sheave which includes the bushing for a very reasonable price. There is a complete list of parts available on the one design page for J/30s.

http://www.rigrite.com/Spars/Kenyon_Spars/Kenyon_One_Design/K_J30_spars.html

Main Halyard Sheaves - Aluminum - Masthead has 2 Sheaves
- New Style Sheave - Heavy-duty w/ integral bushing K-198-7AB4 $ 37.00
- Old Style Sheave w/ 3/8" ID (Requires Bushing) K-198-7A $ 24.00
Main halyard sheave Bushing (Bronze) 3/8" OD x 1/4" ID K-9523 $ 3.00
Main halyard sheave & Topping lift Clevis Pin (1/4" dia.) K-CP4-28 $ 7.00

So what we are saying is to use the New style sheave? and that is AL. But I thought I heard somewhere that delrin was better for rope?

Will the new style sheave do both wire and rope or is it the rope only?

Bill: did you strip the braid or did layline have a custom halyard? their website is OFF , not a good sign.

and if I do Stay Set X ... standard 3/8s we use for nearly everything? about 100 ft.?

hate to tell you guys -- high 80s., on shore 12 kts kicked in at 11, sunny, nice flatish water.

Vic - my sheaves are AL. Layline stripped the halyard and spliced the whole thing. I've also used Dave Smith at Milwaukee Rigging on eBay with good success for both fabricated halyards and buying line.

Staset-X can't be stripped if you go with the stripped halyard approach. The 3/8" 100 feet length is correct.

On Sailing Anarchy, it's reported that Layline may be no longer - too bad. Henry Mallard at Layline used to be a J/30 owner and they contributed to the 2008 NAs as sponsors.

Come on back and sail with us on the bay tomorrow. 40 degrees, raining, winds sustained 30, gusting to 40!

I was considering upgrading all my halyards sheaves this winter to ball bearing Harken sheaves and am wondering why this is not considered here. Could those be not class legal?
Cheers,

I assume if you can find one that fits then it is fine - should check with the class measurer.

Your in Belmont MA? Where is your boat?

Welcome to Georges who recently purchased Foot Loose hull #467. He will be sailing in the Northern New England district out of Cottage Park YC. All you Northern NE sailors, help Georges get acclimated to J/30 racing & cruising!
