Preliminary results from the 2005 Eastport Yacht Club Annapolis - Solomons night race, 45 miles down the Chesapeake Bay, held July 15.
From the Annapolis Capital
J/30 (9 boats)
1, Valhalla, Steve Bardelman, 1/06:55:11 2, Better Mousetrap, Bob Putnam, 1/07:29:19 3, Big Kahuna, Larry Christy, 1/07:29:20
By all accounts it was a light-air race. Must have been - the J/30 fleet usually finishes in the wee hours of the morning, with plenty of time to clean up and maybe get a nap before the bar opens at 6:00 for buck-a bloody.
Maybe get a full report from someone who was there?

The Crab Wrapper had a nice article on former J/30 sailor Jack Biddle now sailing Rum Puppy in the J/105 class at: http://www.capitalonline.com/cgi-bin/read/2005/07_17-67/SAL But the real story of the Solomons race was Steve & Katherine Bardelman and crew on Valhalla. They won the J/30 Class by 34:08 passing all but two of the J/105s who started ten minutes before us in a breeze that was diminishing as the sun came up. Applying PHRF handicaps, Valhalla was first in fleet by nearly ten minutes among the 74 boats sailing the shorter 45-mile course and nearly 20+ minutes ahead of the J/105 winner. Their average corrected speed was faster than all 160 boats sailing the race. Did I mention Valhalla did this despite stopping for 5 minutes after becoming entangled in a fish trap? Don't get me wrong, Biddle sailed a great race, but Valhalla deserved the headlines.
