Many years ago (when there still was a
J/30 Class in the Chicago NOOD), one of the guys from Detroit brought his boat down. He only had a Kevlar 155, but we agreed that he'd sail level with the rest of us. I believe this was still before the class allowed kevlar, so we had a mylar class legal sail.
My observation was that in a straight line, he was probably just as fast as we were, but accelerating out of a tack, we were a tad better off. If memory serves, winds were 12-15ish, reasonably flat water.
