I know a lot of J/30s use the ST1000 or ST2000 tiller pilot for deliveries, cruising, and singlehanded racing. I thought I would start a thread to share information about calibration settings, installation tips, etc. that work with our boats.

I have the ST2000+ but part of me wishes I would have spent the extra money on a big heavy duty unit that I could hook up a more accurate heading sensor to.

When motoring I have been running rudder gain at 3 and damper at 5 (speed setting at 6). It wanders quite a bit, but aything more and it is over active if there is any waves.

In the singlehanded race yesterday with 4-5 foot quartering waves dowwind, I didn't get much chance to play with it but upping the gain to 4 and damper down to 3 it seemed to do well enough not to kill me when I went forward. I also used a bungee to assist in the windward direction of pull.

Interested to hear what others are running for settings and dow you frequently adjust them for conditions.

(P.S. I hit 12 kts through the water with only a main and #3 up. Felt like she had much more to give too! Spend most of the time in the 8-9 range with surfs at 10)
