I long ago quit being an engineer so I wouldn't qualify myself to comment. There are plenty of others that could offer better guidance.
I always thought that the majority of the weight of the boat is carried by sitting on the keel and that the pads are there to keep the boat from falling over. if that's the case, you'll want that area of the trailer to be pretty strong.
