I gave up. A friend drilled out the pins, we replaced them with standard clevis pins, and he notched the mast for me. He did something really nifty so that each pin didn't need its own notch. The box has to be inserted and removed at an angle, and slid around a bit in this process, but it minimized the number of cuts needed in the mast.
