Class rules say the mast step may be no closer than 1" from the molded step in front of it... so if you're racing in
J/30 Class, that may be a small issue.
With only 3 people to hold the boat down, you'd probably heel too much. You might use smaller sails (a #2 instead of a 1), or flatten the main (backstay & outhaul), or lower the traveler. On a reach in a decent breeze, I haven't found anything that works.
