Sounds like you got the problem well diagnosed. There is fiberglass under the wood cabin sole. Take a look at the Phantom #364 Blog that John Hartley wrote to document his rebuild. There are some great pictures on what is below the cabin sole.

Note that not all J/30s have the wood cabin sole. Some were made with just the fiberglass.
