I am starting to update my sail inventory and am trying to determine who will be my sailmaker
It is narrowed down to two, but both are suggesting different mainsail cloth weights,...so I would like the opinion of the class to which they have had the most success with

one is suggesting 6.62oz challenge cloth the other 7.62oz challenge sail cloth
With the class min being 6.5oz both are good, but which would be the sail most of you racers would prefer?

Taras - the answer is... it depends. The heavier weight will last longer and will be better in heavier air. Lighter air performance may not be as good with the heavier fabric. If you sail in predominantly windy conditions, I'd go with the heavier cloth. If you are frequently in light air, go for the lighter cloth. Just my $.02 - I'm sure others will comment with their opinions.

Taras:

I have a Quantum Pentex main with full-length battens. It is a killer combo. Very, very good in heavy weather. Loose-footed. It holds its shape beautifully in both light air as well as heavy air. You might have them put one set of reef lines in it. I have a double set of reef points but have never had to use the second set. We do some offshore sailing, however, and I just wanted to be prepared. Contact Steve Thurston at Quantum Sails in Bristol, RI for details. He's been great to work with.

we have been using 7+ oz for last 15 years or so ... great to have off shore ... but does weigh a bit more when hoisting.

It feels bullet proof. If you do a lot of 15-20+ wind it is best choice. full battens also add a bit of weight.

We used a full batten main at NA along with a few others ... I think it is a trade off ... built in shape vs. need to be extra careful on trimming. Most of my crew can't handle extra careful trimming so we like the full battens better and they DON'T flog when luffing at a start. Or when we sail up to mooring.

Today out in 25+ second reef only on 8 year old delivery North running 6-7 kts ... very comfortable cruising.

Am going to add second reef point to my new main. For some reason we seem to be seeing stronger winds.
