You can blame the construction issues on TPI, not J/Boats. J/Boats severed their relationship with TPI a few years back due to keel box issues on boats constructed using the SCRIMP process.

Yes almost all of our J/30s have the common issues you found too. Good to see you have a "new" J/30 that will last forever with the proper fixes put in place!

Patrick - the infrared photos are really cool. That's a good validation of what a moisture meter would find. What did you use for thermal imaging?

I have an E-series Flir camera. I use it to find water ingress in buildings.
The rest of my boat was dry inside and out, aside from a very small area around one of the grab rail through bolts.

Take a Real good look at those chainplates. TPI chose to use grade 302 stainless instead of 316. As a result, I found major cracks in the chainplates where the deck moisture touched the plate. The plates are way undersized, and the sail guides specify WAY too much shroud tension. The cracks on Nice Pear were visible (3 in one plate alone!) but a good look with die penetrant is strongly recommended.

My chainplates look fine. They held up much better than the 3/4 in Marine plywood that soaked up the years of seapage along them.
