OK - does anyone know how to disassemble the throttle assembly? Better yet, anyone know how to get rid of "play" in the assembly? Mine has the red ball on end of throttle lever and a black pull out lever for neutral.

I pulled the lever, the neutral pull-switch in the middle, and I can't tell if I'm missing some set-screw someplace or if mine is simply fused in place. Does the neutral pull-out lever/switch hold the exterior assembly in place?

Any tips/suggestions much appreciated because I have way too much play in the mount - as if it needs to be tightened on one or both sides to clamp it down onto the lazarette wall.

Caveat: I started this project way too late in the day... fatigue and a few Pacificos *could* have shortened my patience.

Jeff - I assume you are referring to a throttle lever that looks like this:


It is probably fused in place if it hasn't been lubed. Remove the lever from the bulkhead and disconnect the cables. Disassemble the entire assembly and make sure you don't loose the spring and ball bearing that acts as a detent. Clean all the parts get all the corrosion off the rod that goes through the center that the black knob screws into. This must be lubricated well with grease when you reassemble.

You'll see when it is apart how the black knob engages the shift lever or disengages so you just move the throttle cable. The throttle cable moves the same direction when you increase throttle position in either forward or reverse.

Awesome - thanks Bill. That makes sense. While looking at the external piece and the gears around the spindle, there's a fair bit of oxidization/corrosion. It's fused pretty tightly so I'm guessing not much grease was used.

Sawszal and replace ... if it starts to look "problemsome"

Replacements aren't cheap I found, so I managed to figure out how to put mine back together even with one of the stupid little plastic busings broken.

I had a ton of play in mine (the back housing actually moved) and found that the mount was actually broke where the housing fitis into it to hold stationary. I had to completely disassemble, take off the mount, flip it over and drill new mounting holes to fix the problem. Luckily the mount has a second notch on top that works to hold the housing.

About to do this to mine...my guess is that it will fix the problem!

Hello, I have a replacement to install on mine and have tried a number of times to take the old one out but to no avail. Found the set screw which adjusts the friction for the lever and was able to remove the pull out knob, but can not find a way to get the exterior housing off to separate the lever side from the mechanical side in the locker... Any thoughts would be very much appreciated. Need to replace as the pull out shift disconnect has become unrelaiable and will leave the engine in gear regardless of the position of the knob ( I found that the sleeve which the knob passes through has begun to break down altering the available travel of said knob... after 40 years this part is ready to be changed out..
