The Shake-ettes from "Shaken not Stirred", skippered by Becky Latrobe, won the Roy Smith Memorial Regatta yesterday with 2 bullets in the 4 boat
J30 Class of all women racers. The racing was very competitive with the lead changing several times over the course of the 2 windward/leeward races. Any of the boats, Delirious, Mary Lou, Dream Catcher, or Shaken not Stirred could have won these races.
In the first race, Delirious showed everyone the way to go, by starting on port and leading the others to the 1st mark by 35 seconds. The lead changed several times on the 1st downwind leg. I think each of the boats held the # 1 position for a few moments during the jibing duels that took place. Upwind was a demonstration of great crew work by all in the building breeze, as boats were tacking to cover. The second time around was more of the same as positions changed a few more times. At the finish of race #1 the results were:
Shaken not Stirred
Mary Lou
Delirious
Dream Catcher
Race # 2 was even closer while the boats battled it out up and down the course. At the 1st spin takedown Delirious had captured the lead by cutting the corner in a shifting breeze. Mary Lou was hot on her rudder with Shaken and Dream Catcher close behind. Dream Catcher was only a few boat lengths back going in to the take down, but unfortunately had some equipment failure. They recovered well and were back in the race. At the next upwind mark Mary Lou, Shaken and Delirious arrived dead even, all overlapped for the second spin set. The close race continued into and out of the 2nd take-down, and was finally decided on the last leg at the finish with Shaken first by only a few seconds, Delirious second, Mary Lou right behind followed by Dream Catcher.
The Shake-ettes of Shaken not Stirred took 4 of 4 guns between the West River Women's Big Boat Regatta and the Roy Smith Regatta to win the Roy Smith Memorial Trophy, which will be presented at the CBYRA awards ceremony in January.
The results for both regattas are as follows:
Roy Smith West River Big Boat
Shaken not Stirred
1 1 1 1
Mary Lou
2 3 2 2
Delirious
3 2 3 dns
Dream Catcher
4 4 dnc dnc
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!
I hope to see these teams out again next year, and maybe we can round up a
few more J 30's. It would be even more exciting to see 6-8 J30's out for
these events. Over the years other boats such as Bump in the Night, Better
Mousetrap, Jaguar, and Sage have participated in these races.
A total of (5) Catalina 27's, (4) J 105's, (10) J 22's (4) J 30's and (10)
PHRF boats were on the starting line between these 2 regattas.
