I have a Sheave box that needs to be updated, most of the sheaves need to be replaced. Are you planning to do the work or have someone do it? I don't have the tools to replace the pins for the internal sheaves. I have a new mast and it came with a new box.

So OK ... I think I have the problem now under control ... but thanks for the offer.

I know most of you guys think us senior citizens just do yard sales, 2for1 drinks, and consignment shops.

But every once in a while:
At Wickford Nautical Consignment shop today I found a box of a half dozen of what I have been calling the 12 hole Sheave Box ... magic marked as for a Bristol. with a hand written part number of 130528-1 and no manufacturer stamp on them.

They were hidden under a pile of other "junk" stainless parts. has four big sheaves and three offsets inside the mast. the top jib sheave is pinned, the rest riveted.

I'm thinking it was a standard part and when they auctioned off the Bristol parts back in the late 80s, someone has been holding on to this box of boxes for the last 20 years.

Since there was another J30 mast still at the boat yard I brought it over to compare:

The box was priced at $150, but we negotiated down.






so I think i am covered and will install the box in Oct.

But let me say that some of the prices on other stuff have been radically kicked up. To the point where a Port Supply card is becoming a vital resource.

So OK ... every 25 years or so I change out the Halyard Box. I'm just a few years late on that schedule, but thought I would share:
1. I didn't do the work but had John at Rose Marco Marine do it. He's the service manager and normally wouldn't be out in 90+ degrees and sun, but things are slow this time of year.
2. We did pull the mast as we had other things to do.
a. new VHF antenna -- every 7 years even though it is now working fine. four years of sun is cracking the case top. I don't remember when I did the coax, but the plugs are green.
b. new main sheave -- every 25 years [and grooved from wires used in past].
c. new Second Spin Halyard ... just because why not. There are now two J30s with second spin halyard run.
d. new second jib halyard ... every 10 years and because I stupidly kept wire 10 years ago when I redid it.
e. new harken roller furling and headstay, which was new on #327 in 1982 and moved to #505 in 85. Yes, I have had that same headstay/Harken for 30 years. duh .... the reason we had to change it is that the way they were built then there is no easy way to really inspect the forestay.
f. new spreader boots ... they only last 4 years here in the sun.
3. Here are the photos of the insides of the box replaced:






Note on work ...
it basically took about 5 hits using an inpact driver to break each of the 12 machine screws free. minor scaring, but reused. Also the screw holes in the replacement halyard box were slightly off center requiring some filing to elongate them up say 1/32 of an inch or so. no big deal ... I would have used a dremel, but John is an old fashioned kind of guy and rattail filed them to fit.

Dealing with Antique Boats. The halyard box i got at Wickford Marine was not an exact duplicate of the one I replaced ... difference is that the pin in the replacement is 1/2 in. vs. the old one being 3/8 in.

So drilled out 3/8 hole in the new head stay swage fitting to 1/2. didn't notice it until we were trying to attach the new headstay. If you go to original post in this thread ... you will note that the part calls out 3/8 or 1/2 pin options ... duh. The pin at the stem is 1/2 in.

What sheave do you use for the 2nd spin haly'd? The "Spinnaker anti-sky"?

I think the one that normally is used on a J30 is the top one. so the bottom one was for the second.
That being said ... note first photo in this thread ... I think that is mast for #349 last year winter storage, and it appears he is using the bottom ...
505 and 526 I am sure used the top one for the original spin halyard.

so far we just use one for port pole and the other for starboard pole ... I'm not noticing any fraying on the line ... we haven't got our skill levels up here yet to do a peel. and the wind has been a bit too high. We don't do a lot of "skying" so I am at a loss to figure out that term used here.

I just checked my original 505 box, also photos above, and it does seem that the top inside edge of the J29 box is indented where the halyard would run out which was not on the original box of 505.

Other than that it looks exactly the same as the one pictured from the J29

So OK ... today we had the crew of Belle Faster J30 #537 on board and 11-year-old William decided that since the Vee Jay could do peels [one of apparently two J30s equipped to do peels] ... and since the 1.5 Xmas spin was starting to hang ... that his dad Michael and I should foredeck a peel to the .5 while he was at the helm.

... Duh ... this way William could get the record as the first J30 helm to do a spinaker peel, and first J30 peel with an 11-year-old at the helm. He also wanted to capture the Vee Jay boat record as the youngest helm to do a spin jibe, but that was too easy, but we managed to complicate it a bit with a little tangle from the 1.5 spin sheets just before we hit the beach, which we missed.

So let the record stand, until someone can come up with a prior:

1. first J30 Spin Peel ... Dec. 23, 2011 on Vee Jay J30 #505
2. at helm William Lusty, Team Belle Faster, J30 #537, 11-years old
3. Crew included Vic from Vee Jay; Terri, Sophie and Michael from Team Belle Faster.

Standard peel with .5 hoisted inside the 1.5. 1.5 then dropped to deck while .5 continued to fly.

Actually was quite a bit of fun and an ideal way to counter dropping wind during the afternoon.

It certainly was fun. I thought that the beach was coming up rather quickly - but you didn't seem too worried about it!

A second halyard is a fine addition to the boat, although I'm glad the wind didn't stengthen again. There would have been a mutiny onboard if we'd suggested another peel to put the 1.5oz back up....
