The 2009 edition of the class rules state:

5.3 Interior Equipment supplied with the standard boat from the factory may not be deleted or substituted for except by equivalent items of comparable weight or as specifically authorized below. Optional equipment offered by the builder or comparable equipment installed by the dealer or owner is permitted as are other items such as shelves or drawers to personalize the interior.

Optional interior equipment includes the following:

Re stove weight - I remember that this was thoroughly discussed on the forum and BOG meeting where the vote was taken in 2008. Does the class rule listed under paragraph 5.3 answer your question on the stove weight?

On Rhapsody I have a fully functional single burner butane cartridge stove that is gimbled and has a weight on the bottom of the stove to keep the gimble level. The combo with stove, fuel cartridge, iron weight, cutting board and cooktop weighs 20 pounds.

The class rules in the J/30 Basic Specifications section actually shows a 3/4" shaft.

Propeller: Standard propeller is folding two-bladed Martec Design Number 23780 - Right Hand, 14 inch diameter, 14 pitch elliptical for 3/4 inch shaft.

Many boats were delivered with a 1" shaft because some new owners complained of shaft vibration, and extra margin needed for added horsepower with a 2GM20. Realize the expense includes replacing the prop, strut, shaft, coupling and cutlass bearing if a change is made.

During the recent sale of my boat the surveyor commented that the 14X14 prop that is class legal is the wrong prop for the boat. This has been confirmed by Bengt Johannson in discussions with Martec. With the current prop it is difficult to get the engine to 80% of max as encouraged by Yanmar. I believe this leads to carbon buildup in the cylinders. If the rings contract during the cold winter temps the carbon prevents them from returning to the cylinder walls. This can lead to cylinder damage. Happened to be about 10 years ago and had to have the engine rebuilt.

The J30 Class needs to look into this and see if a prop change is in order. Would help extend the life of your old engines.

Bill - Thanks for all the data. That said, I owe an apology. In my attempt at comic releif I've created a whole lot of work and distraction.
I have no intention to take out battens, change my prop shaft or to change or do anything with my factory installed stove.

As is, I race with the plastic dry storage bins, a teak and holly sole. all the cushions and a cooler full of Sam Adams - in bottles. When my crew complained about not having the halyard's stripped of their covers because of the weight saving, we took one beer out of the cooler and set it on the dock as an offset.
If we have a weight issue for a one design event, we'll be sailing the boat as built but we'll starve the crew rather than sacrifice any more beer.

As noted in the deck refurbishment thread the measurer indicates a plan to eliminate the cowl vent deck fitting at the bow. There is no exception under Class Rule 1.3 and 1.4 to allow this and 4.4 does not allow the measurer to make such a ruling when there is a vested interest. If there remains a desire to eliminate the fitting, the measurer should appeal to the BOG for a ruling.

David may I inquire about the topic of discussion please?

Dell, this is an informal meeting about a minor one design compliance issue - covering an external cowl vent fitting on a refurbished deck. Attendance is optional, but all input is welcome. Should be a very short meeting.

Advantages: Eliminates water penetration risks.
Disadvantage: perceptions/realistic loss of OD configuration.

We are talking about a $40 part to install. Are we too agressive with these types of things? Is this type of change the same as removing the meat hooks etc. Perhaps a BOG vote will decide, but we wanted to query opinion and discuss in an open audio conference.
