Good morning,

I'm trying to adjust idle on the old 2GM and am running into an issue: I can get it to idle nicely around 1250 rpm. It dies around 1000. While adjusting the idle is simple, when I get it in a good running position, the kill switch physically doesn't have enough room to move to kill engine. Am I missing something, or is there better idle adjustment system/hardware out there to get this done? If you look at picture, kill knob pulls the cable on top, compressing spring all the way etc. trying to move lever back, but no matter how much adjustment is done, the hardware fitting doesn't enough room to release lever far enough to kill the engine. Any ideas? Thanks

John

John - I get image not found on your link. The idle should be set to 850-900 rpm according to the Yanmar manual.

John:

The cable for the kill switch should have lots of room for an adjustment. My cable was frozen from salt water and corrosion. I ended up replacing the entire unit at a cost of roughly $28.00. It's an easy install with the toughest part freeing the nut directly behind the kill switch plunger back behind the instrument panel. I don't know if this is your problem but for $28.00 it's a cheap probable fix and if it doesn't do the trick, you'll at least have a back-up kill switch cable when you need it.

Corrected photo link below(I hope). Advice on how to set idle lower (without motor dying) would be greatly appreciated as well. Thanks for your input.

(in photo, once the spring is completely compressed, there is no more room to pull back to kill)

I fixed the link for your picture in the original post with the new link you sent.

Look at the Yanmar 2GM Operations manual page 12 and 16 at this link.

First - there is a separate cable used for fuel cutoff to stop the engine. The engine should not stop using the throttle control.

Next - if you are unable to reduce the idle using the adjustment, you may have an injector problem (e.g. injector nozzle plugged so it runs very rough and dies).

You may want to pull the injectors and take the injectors to Torrenson marine (since you are in Chicago) to be pop tested, nozzles replace and shimmed. Once they are replaced, you should have an easier time adjusting the idle. It will probably run you ~ $100 if you take them to them. Make sure you ask them for a set of new insulators to replace when you put them back in the engine.

Definitely masking another issue by adjusting the idle up.

I need to get my injectors in and tested/cleaned/overhauled. She isn't starting to sharp as of late.

I added a cold start kit to my QM15 after doing injectors and valves. It works great in Seattle in the middle of winter.Easy installation. Price was between $200 and $300 and it starts like a gas engine. Rarly use it since doing a one way to Hawaii{18 days from Newport Oregon}. I can't find a phone number for the supplier,But I think that Gallery Marine in Seattle can find it. 206 547 2477
