Hello all. After a few years of racing our own slow boat and on other peoples faster boats, it is time to get ourselves some more sailing performance. Having noticed the J30's out there and what they can do the J30 is at the top of my list for our next boat.
Are there any boats available in the area?

There are 2 very under used J-30s in Everett. Garuda - former charter boat out of Seattle that has not left dock after an engine failure. South side main marina about c or d docks. Very nice set up boat - needs racing sails. Mystique - former top sailing boat out of Seattle that has only been used for weekend cruises twice a year. Very stock and needs new sails. South side main marina on P dock. BoB is on South side Q dock.
If you want me to drop off your info on those boats, I can walk the docks and leave your name and offer to consider to buy. Drop me a direct email at jageck@earthlink.net
I got one other j30 sold out of Everett a couple years ago. That is one way to keep my class racing competition down!

You have to PROMISE to race it . We always seem to be one boat short of our own class in a few of the bigger races. You just missed a honey of a J/30 that was for sale in Nanaimo. I don't know where it went.

Yes we need another J30 on the line for our own class.
There are always great options for boats. Vampire will be for sale in three years now. Had to push the date back as I bought a new house. I love my J30 but I need a big blue water boat for retirement.
There are a few things to watch for when buying a J
I would not be to concerned about getting one with great sails. Better to go with a good hull and all the gear done right. You will be getting sails soon any way when you want to be at the top of the game.
That said many J30s are very competitive on old sails. I know I would never say Tony is slow with his old main and #1
So email if you have questions I'm always around. Just been moving so some I have been a bit tardy here.
Next reginal J30 distance races are. Vendee saltspring (double handed)
And the great Northern Century 100 race and that's also double handed. We normaly have 4 J30s in that.
Scott you should be done and home by then. You in?

I do promise to race it. My better looking (and perhaps better sailing) half would not have it any other way. We have been at many of the larger regattas for the last couple of years (Thetis, Saltspring, Swiftsure, Van Isl 360)crewing on Cu Na Mara (C&C 115) or dilligaf (Ross 930).
It is unfortunate I have entered the J30 market a few months late for the one in Nanaimo. I think I spotted it at the dock in Schooner Cove when I was there for Race Around the Rocks a couple weeks ago. Sadly it was not racing.

Are any of the local J30's coming to SIN Regatta in Nanaimo later this month? It would be nice to meet and have a look at your boats.

Funny I know those boats very well. Scott and I did van isle on different boats last time. Scott was on red heather and I was on Cinco de Mayo.
I can't make SIN this year but it's on the list for next year. Now that the boat is in Victoria we will be doing more racing.
Your always welcome to come down and see the boat. We will be in maple bay during the vendee. You could probably see 4 j30s then. There is one that cals maple bay home and then Radiant heat, limelight and Vampire will be there.
Don't rush and get the right boat. But your picking a great boat. Fast safe and fun.
Great cruiser with a good turn of speed at a great price. It has it all but hey I'm biased.
See you on the dock. I am always easy to find as I have the silly Vampire stuff on. And if any one needs branding for there boat just talk to me.

Slight correction: I was on Rubato for the 360 last year. Red Heather for Vic Maui this year.
I will be at N100. Been waiting for it all year.
(P.S. Some old sails are definitely good; My headsails and spinnakers are 1982)

Rubato....blue Hanse, right? We saw it frequently from Cu Na Mara in the Van Isl, much to our dismay.
So far there seems to only be a few J30's available out there, largely project boats. I dont mind a little work, but i wouldn't mind a cream puff either.

Oh scott. Old jib! Now your just rubbing patos in. Can't wait to see you at N100. Have a good trip over the pond and I might see you at the dock before the Vic Maui.
Be patient for a boat. There are 500+ made so there is another one on the market all the time. But as I said if you find a good hull it's sometimes worth the work.
Vampire had sat for close to ten years before I came along and she is doing very well now. She had one foot in the grave before I spent almost $20,000 on her. Everything is done now except the paint job.
Which reminds me. Scott do you still have those templates for the keel?

Which reminds me. Scott do you still have those templates for the keel? You mean my keel templates? Hahaha. If you and Scott can get together to pass them off you are welcome to use them, but I would like them back at some point.

Sweet. I can bring them back to you right after the bottom job in aug. Scott if you bring them over with red heather I will grab them here if that's ok. I will owe the two of you beer. I seen how quick scotts new bottom was.

I have a J/30 on Lake Okanagan in the interior that I would consider selling. It had most of the factory options at the time including freshwater cooling, hot water tank, and the interior table. Like most of J/30's it needs a few things. If you are interested let me know and I can get you more information.

I'm interested Lakesailor. What can you tell me about its current conditon, what it needs, and what you are asking for it?
Of course it is the hot water tank that got my attention....kidding. Do you still have the trailer?

The trailer actually belongs to a friend who owns a CS30...I borrowed it to bring the J/30 up here and it fit the trailer very well. I am certain it could be borrowed again to move the boat back to down to the lower mainland.
PM me your email and I would be happy to send you more information on the boat including what it needs, price, and all of that good stuff....

They are sitting in my shed, and I haven't actually used them. I didn't have time in the last couple of haulouts to actually do the template work. that was going to be next year's project since I know I damaged my keel's trailing edge. If Dom is all right with it, I will bring them over to you and then get them back. Or I can just make copies of them too.

Sure, not a problem Scott. I might still have one of the rudder templates in my garage too. When I find it I'll let you and Don know.

Hopefully Bout de Ciel Bleu sold for close to the $45k asking price.
I also hope there is a good J30 out there within my budget of under $30k.

Looks like Slingshot is for sale in Seattle. Check the "boats for sale" area of the forum.

Bump. Any updates to PNW boats? I have a buddy who is an avid racer that is looking to upgrade from his Cat 27. He would be a great addition to the fleet.

We still got Mystique sitting idle in Everett. Pretty much a stock J-30. I could drop a phone number/contact info off on the boat and the owner could contact you. Also saw Syzegy out of water after a fixed-to-folding prop change, and they were talking about ready to move to something else (frustrated with new prop I think. Not used to less back-down thrust at low RPM) Drop me a note with your info or you can find Mystique on South P dock of Everett's South Marina. Behind the WestMarine Store.
After 30 years we finally repaired our spreader bases. Fwd rivets were pulling out and had cracks in between front three holes so ended up through bolting rather than cutting the slots for the through bar repair. Pretty easy repair with barrel nuts and SS rods with ends threaded. All approved by Aircraft Liaison Engineers familair with stress cracks in Aluminum. Already had compression tube in aft so no need for hard work.
I picked up a very nice spare dining table and leg set from Grady Morgan (former Slingshot). Pd $100. I got two now. Anyone want to make an offer?
We are readying for 65nm 'Round Whidbey race May 4-5 sponsored by Oak Harbor YC. Should be interesting as we have lots of Grey Whales in right now. Don't want to bump them in the night! See all ya'll at PITCH.

Hi, I'm definitely interested in the table. What price do you have in mind? I've got a few kids and table would be wonderful.

As much as we would have liked a J30, we found after spending far too much time looking at boats last year that the PNW J30's for sale were typically project boats, or priced very high ($45k plus).
Interior and east coast J30's often seemed in better shape at substantially lower cost. But the cost of getting those boats to the west coast could easily increase the cost of the boat by 50% which just didn't seem worth it.
In the end we found far more value in a local Olson 911 and have been very happy with her so far. No doubt we will be racing with the Vancouver Island/Vancouver J30's soon. I believe there is another Olson 911 for sale in Seattle, but this may not be the forum to bring that up in.

Just to correct...It was Islandia that was out of water and the owner frustrated with new folding prop. Syzygy is still looking pretty in her slip waiting for first 70 degree day. Maybe tomorrow (finally.)

Yes Rich, you are correct that J/30s out here seem to carry a "PNW Premium" over east/central listings. But it comes with the territory. I know Natural High was probably 5-8K more than she would have been on the east, but I wanted a J/30 and didn't want to ship it.
Olson 911s are good boats too, but they seem to carry a big premium over the J too. When i was looking I couldn't find anything less than $35K,

I think we are saying the same thing Scott. The PNW premium for the J30 made the $35k Olson 911 look like good value. Especially considering they are a decade newer than most J30's, similar racing performance, similar cruising amenities, with in my opinion, better light air performers and better motors. That said, I have no doubt I would have been happy with a J30 if one could have been found locally at a realistic cost. A $5 to $8 k premium would have been fine. I kid you not, people were contacting me to offer their J30's with original sails for over $40k. Or major projects for $20k.
I am sure Narural High is a great boat. I know her previous owner but was a bit to slow in my desire for a J30. I also just missed out on a very nice one that went to Schooner Cove from Nanaimo.
In any event, we will be happy to chase you around the race course in our 911. This summer we plan to be at Thetis Island, Race Around the Rocks (Lasqueti Island course), SIN, Maple Bay, English Bay Scramble. I will be on my Van Isl boat (dilligaf) for Around Saltspring, and the Van Isl. Did notice your good work at Patos, and your kilt.

He would be a great addition to the fleet. i haven't replied to this message as my plan is to spend time this spring/summer prepping Grasshopper for sale. Nothing is seriously wrong: she needs a good cleaning and I have a sealed propane tank system to install in the stern. If your friend is interested: My phone number is 360 378-2459, and I'm located in Friday Harbor; email is gbooth@rockisland.com. I'll be happy to answer any question he my have, I'm the original owner of the boat. Gary Boothman

Remember forced air heat and HP floor dingy and trick nav software and close hauled wind gauge that let's her see the wind in the dark.
And the glow in the dark decals are cool too.
Just hauled in sept and new VC bottom paint aplied and sanded to 400 and burnished.

And like Gary I just need to tidy up from racing. But I have the papers for the boat for Canada and US Regestration so easy there. And new paint on the hull. Pictures coming.
