The race to Solomons Island marks the mid summer break for Chesapeake Bay J/30 racers. Here's an update of the eleven days of one-design racing so far this season in and around Annapolis.

Racing commenced April 14 with six boats sailing three races run by Annapolis YC. Avita claimed the day by two points over Rag Doll who edged Insatiable on a tiebreaker.

In early May Better Mousetrap took home a bag containing Gill tech polos for each crew member after winning the six-race, three-day Annapolis NOOD. Insatiable was four back in second with Bump on the podium in third. Nine boats sailed in a light northerly Friday, a building breeze to the mid teens Saturday that moderated Sunday. The primary feature throughout weekend was a strong ebb current that reached 1.5 knots.

The weekend to race to Gibson Island and subsequent buoy racing on the Magothy River attracted six. The feeder hosted by Gibson Island YS proved too slow to meet the time limit though Rag Doll was close to finishing as time expired. Better Mousetrap had two bullets in Sunday's races on the river hosted by Magothy River SA, with Rag Doll second and Encounter third. Results are pending appeal by OCS boats that were not given credit for restarting.

(Part 2...)
Over Memorial Day weekend, six boats sailed the 17 miler from Annapolis to Miles River on Maryland's eastern shore. Insatiable had the lead after short tacking the shallows near Bloody Point Light. Bebop closed the gap during the long spinnaker run up the Eastern Bay, finally taking the lead at the turn off Tilghman Point only to sail into a hole and have most of the fleet roll past. Insatiable held off Mousetrap for the win, with Avita third.

Four J/30's contested the breezy two-race Leukemia Cup with Mousetrap besting Avita and Insatiable. It was a pleasant surprise to have the #3 up in mid June for this charity event.

Seven boats sailed a shifty northeaster with current a factor, as Leap Frog was perfect going 1-1-1 in June's Annapolis YC 76th Annual Regatta. Insatiable was second and 090 aka 'the white boat' third in the initial weekend regatta for new owner Dave Moss.

Nine boats rendezvoused for the Shearwater Twilight race but lack breeze never topped 2 knots and the race was abandoned.

At Eastport YC Solomons Island's race after 44 miles racing through the night five of the six J/30s converged at the finished within eleven minutes. Insatiable came out on top with Avita second and Better Mousetrap third.
