Better Mousetrap topped a small but competitive J/30 fleet at the 46th Annual CBYRA Annapolis Race Week held over Labor Day weekend, September 1, 2 & 3, 2012. Posting a 1-3-1 on Saturday, Mousetrap led Bebop and The White Boat. Racing was held in an 8 knot northwesterly that faded near the end of the day. Eastport YC abandoned Sunday's racing after two hours of calm. Monday's first race was started in an 8 knot southerly, but a thunderstorm blew through the course with sustained 25 knot winds and gusts to 30. Bebop held off Avita to win that race and move ahead of Mousetrap for the series.

After the storm cleared two more races were held in moderate but shifty 8-10 knot winds. Insatiable showed great speed in the final two races winning the day with a 3-1-1. Mousetrap held off Bebop in each of the final two races to take the regatta by 1 point with Insatiable third just two back.

Annapolis Race Week attracted 125 boats in nine one-design classes and six handicap fleets on three circles plus a distance course.

From the Crab Wrapper (aka Annapolis Capital):

Better Mousetrap owner Bob Putnam said the seven-boat J/30 Class was midway through the first upwind leg when the storm suddenly hit, bringing heavy rain and 30-knot winds. Fortunately, there was no carnage as teams nursed their boats around the course under shortened sail and without spinnakers on the downwind legs.

"That squall came up with the snap of a finger and gave us all the excitement we missed on Sunday," Putnam said. (Continued about halfway down...)
