Hi,
We are thinking of adding shore power to our J30 this spring.
Does anyone have any suggestions or advice?
Thanks,
Chris

Chris,

Which boat did you end up buying?

Go to this link and click on the link labeled "Rhapsody Shore Power & Battery Charger Procedure (pdf file)". It documents what I did on Rhapsody. I installed a breaker with reverse polarity indicator afterwards.

When I weigh the benefits and costs, personally I just can't justify adding fixed shore power to my boat unless I was planning to run a microwave or TV or something.

I use a pigtail adapter and a quality power bar that will run a battery charger and an electric heater if I need it. I only run a charger when I need to (lights on, hanging out or if I forgot and left the master on) so i don't need to worry about becoming a pole for someone elses wayward AC current.

Why do you desire to add shore power? If you do, go with a SmartPlug. Some insurance companies give you enough credit that it pays for itself.

We bought Greg and Steph Moll's Falcon.
Thanks for pointing me to your pdf.
We have kids and I think the shorepower will be a good idea for us or more accurately them...
We hope to spend lots of time on the boat at the dock and on the lake.

I put shore power on Falcon years ago Used a small Blue sea pannel with a main and three breakers Hot water heater, Battery charger and a pair of plugs added to each side of the cabin

It works well for 1)dock side and its a real nice thing when the boat is on the hard for power down below Keeps the batteries charged etc

If I were to do it again I would do both the 12 v and the 115 in one pannel Blue sea has a nice one it would make for a cleaner installation
