Hi Dave,

New idea for the association. Each district should start a mentor program. People that are interested in purchasing a J30 or those that have recently purchased a J30 should be assigned a local human (J30 owner) to reach out to for a beer and to shoot the sh-- (in their back yard).

Looking back, this is something that my father and I would have loved to have access to. We are pretty smart guys and have been racing for years. We were able to get the boat up to speed in our first year on our own. For someone new to sailing and or racing, this is not generally the case. The boat is easy to sail, but not as easy to sail well. The web site is fantastic, but nothing beats human interaction and the friendships that result. Now is a good time to get this going as districts wrestle with the reality that boats are leaving (selling) faster than they are coming in. You can look at this as a negative, but I don't see it that way. People still want to buy these boats. They are just being redistributed. The association should be there to welcome them, both through the web site/emails as well as in person. The association is extremely friendly and supportive when requested. Some people just need some encouragement and a friendly face to help get them started.

I too like this idea. We have many years of experience racing but are new to this boat. Our assumption is that it's going to take at least one and maybe two seasons to get to understand it. Having someelse who has experience with the J 30 and with racing acting as a mentor/advisor would be a huge help.
